Natural Holistic Alternative Health

Welcome to WholeLife Pages.  Our goal is to provide you with the resources you need to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.  Our focus is on natural, holistic and alternative approaches as we feel these will play an increasingly important role in our overall well-being.  If you are a provider of alternative or natural services or products, please do contact us as we would like to invite you to be part of our growing community.

What is holistic living?

Holistic approaches take into account all potential factors that may affect our overall health and well-being. So rather than just considering physical issues, social, spiritual and mental aspects are also considered.  The principle of “holism” is a metaphysical one that considers;

“the whole to be more than the sum of its parts.”

While the principle has been acknowledged for thousands of years, the term was introduced in the early 1900s in the seminal book “Holism and Evolution” by the South African Jan Smuts.  Holistic approaches can be applied to all aspects of life helping to do the following:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Help you do the things you really want to do
  • Enhance romantic relationships and connect with others on a deeper level
  • Prevent certain diseases
  • Boost energy
  • Increase wakefulness and concentration
  • Help you to develop a spiritual connection with the world around you

In this website we take the broad concept of holistic living and split it into three categories:

1. Holistic health

For a contemporary understanding of holistic health there are a number of resources available from the National Center For Complimentary And Alternative Medicine.  The subjects we plan to cover include acupuncture, aromatherapy, natural products such as the best probiotic supplements, mind-body medicine (which we also cover in our section on exercise and fitness) and homeopathy.  We will rotate our focus.  An early goal will be to have a section on natural approaches to nail fungus treatment and combating yellow nails (see article) based on advice and guidance from FungusFacts.com, as well as step by step guides to wart removal by wartremovalpro.com. It is estimated that over 35 million people in the US suffer from Onychomycosis (nail fungus infections) and most people will encounter the HPV virus at some point in their lifetimes, so it is about time we learned about natural approaches to dealing with these disorders rather than using potentially harmful conventional treatments.  Holistic approaches encourage the body to heal itself and set out to treat the whole body rather than tackle (or mask) a particular symptom.

2. Home And Garden Health

As we develop this site we will review environmental products and services for the home as well as focusing in on green building approaches.  This is because we think focusing on aspects such as air purification, feng shui and sustainable living are key to our overall physical and spiritual well being so will be covering these aspects in future articles. We’ll also touch on keeping healthy and energized during travel, when you are away from the comforts of home.

3. Exercise And Fitness

No website on personal health would be complete without dealing with approaches to exercise and fitness.  We will draw particularly on exercise approaches developed on the back of eastern traditions such as Yoga, QiGong, Pilates, progressive relaxation and Tai Chi.  Meditation and spiritual exercise also have their place and we look forward to providing guidance from experts on these subjects.

But not all holistic exercises hail from eastern traditions.  Just plain old swimming helps work practically all muscles in the body and requires you to control your breathing. As a low impact exercise injuries are rare and it can easily be practiced as a form of holistic exercise.  (Out of preference when we choose a pool we prefer non-chlorine based sanitation – learn more over at poolshock.)

There’s lots more to come on all these subjects and we look forward to accompanying you on your personal path to a fulfilling life.

What is a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a medical professional who deals with issues involving the musculoskeletal and nervous system. Many times a chiropractor works in conjunction with other medication professionals to help people suffering from pain of the lower or upper back, neck, arm, leg, or joint pains as well as helps to relieve headaches.

Chiropractors do not prescribe medications or drugs for their patients instead they use a variety of other treatments such as spinal manipulation and mobilizations to treat patients who have a variety of problems. Chiropractors go through three years of training after college to become chiropractors. Chiropractor training is not the same as medical school. Chiropractors are not trained to recognize the symptoms of medical conditions, but rather are trained to focus on manipulation of the spine believing that this is the way to help maintain health.

Although chiropractors are often called doctors of chiropractic medicine they are not medical doctors and are what is considered to be limited practitioner meaning they cannot dispense medication or perform surgery.

Once considered to be almost quacks by regular medical practitioners, Chiropractors have been more or less accepted by the medical community with some medical professionals also having chiropractic as well as medical training.

Chiropractics are not physical therapists and many states have laws forbidding those practicing chiropractic medicine from calling themselves physical therapists as physical therapists have their own special training programs and licensing.

Chiropractors are actually divided into two separate groups, those known as straights and those called mixers. Straights are chiropractors who believe that all health problems are caused by misalignment of spinal bones, and only by correcting this misalignment can a patient once again become healthy. Mixers are chiropractors who acknowledge that misalignment is not the only cause of ill health, but that germs, and hormones play a role in disease. Mixers are more likely to diagnosis medical conditions and urge their patients to seek medical advice in the advent of a disease.

Chiropractic treatment and spinal adjustments are most likely to help patients who suffer from low back pain due to a number of conditions. These treatments may help to relax muscles resulting in reduced pain for people suffering from these conditions.

While patient satisfaction with chiropractic treatment is quite high there is little evidence that these treatments are effective in situations where a patient may suffer from fibromyalgia and other conditions. In fact many times direct contact with the knots of muscles patients with fibromyalgia have can increase pain or cause pain to extended to other parts of the body.

While chiropractic care may be useful in some cases, chiropractors in your area, like a chiropractor Charlotte NC, should never be seen as a replacement for a medical professional for the treatment of any disease.
